3… 2… 1… Liftoff!
Take a poll amongst wristwatch collectors, and we'd bet the consensus would be that there might be nothing more important or iconic in a watch collection than an Omega Speedmaster.
Sure, chronographs such as the Rolex Daytona or the Heuer Carrera are classics - icons even, but neither can match the stature of the Speedy with regards to importance in history. In fact, arguably no watch can.
But instead of resting on their historical laurels, Omega has continued to write the story of the Speedmaster, pushing the boundaries of what can be accomplished in terms of mechanics and exploring new materials. We’ve seen unique variations of the Speedy, stretching beyond the aesthetics of a black dial chronograph capable of exploring the cosmos, such as the Alaska I, Speedsonic and even one with Snoopy making his way to the moon on the caseback. Let us also not forget their innovative “Spirate” technology, the controversial MoonSwatch and several iterations of the famed watch forged entirely out of Omega's proprietary ‘Canopus Gold’.
This particular Speedy, a Reference 310.60.42.50.02.001, is the latest iteration of the traditional Professional. It features a 42mm ‘Canopus Gold’ twisted-lug case with barrel pushers, a domed sapphire crystal, a DO90 anodized aluminum bezel insert, a luminous silver dial with recessed sub registers and a matching handset, and a signed crown to operate Omegas latest updated hand-cranking movement in the Calibre 3861 – featuring a co-axial escapement, METAS certification and a magnetic resistance rating that eclipses 15,000 gauss. The bracelet is just as outstanding, comprised of ‘Canopus Gold’ and using 5-arched-link profile that tapers down to a signed push-button deployant clasp.
These updated Speedy Pros perfectly blend vintage aesthetics, modern function and wearability. However this Speedy in particular, adds an extra layer of, “If you know, you know” to any observing watch enthusiast from near and afar.
